WHY AEA DOES NOT RUN HOOFCARE SEMINARS/CLINICS
After a many years of organising and/or attending assorted horse and hoof care seminars, and listening to participant feedback, we have come to the conclusion that while general hoof care seminars certainly have benefits, they also have their drawbacks.
Seminars can be a great way for a business or instructor to earn a large amount of money in a short space of time but are not an ideal way to teach horse owners how to trim, particularly if done so without follow-up training either privately or otherwise.
It is well known in teaching circles that only 5 - 10% of the information in a verbal lecture will be retained by the participant and only about 20 - 40% of the information will be retained after a 'hands-on' practical teaching session.
Considering those statistics, we believe that attending a seminar/clinic to learn how to trim your horse's hooves is not the best way to gain trimming competency.
All skilled instructors understand this and therefore AEA has decided not to 'follow the crowd' and run 'Hoofcare Seminars'.
We have listed here some of the problems we have found with the generally available hoof care seminar:
1. Seminars can attract a large number of participants (up to 60+) which makes it difficult for each participant to get adequate one-on-one time with the instructor. 2. Seminars can be very expensive, particularly as they often run over 2 or more days which can include the extra expense of travel and accommodation. 3. With so many participants, often the instructor will have little time to answer all the questions, give personal attention, or to check all the trimming throughout the course of the day/s. 4. Seminars usually begin with one or more days of theory which follows a set format rather than providing information based on the individual participants current or required knowledge. 5. Theoretical information given at seminar lectures is often already available in the many excellent books available about bare hoof care and natural lifestyle. 6. Seminars are designed to give a large group of people a large amount of information in a short space of time, and therefore should be considered an overview only. 7. Seminars are not designed to give the participant any type of qualification and rarely check (or test) for any competency in trimming skills before completion. 8. Participants may often have to attend a number of seminars to gain even a minimal amount of competency, thus adding more expense.
A BETTER ALTERNATIVE - THE AEA BAREFOOT TRIM PROGRAM
Julie Leitl has drawn on both her own experience as a certified ESHOP hoofcare professional and her training as a government accredited Level 4 Workplace Trainer/Assessor to design a barefoot trim education program for AEA that is as thorough as it is flexible, catering for the learning needs of every horse owner as an individual.
AEA can teach you how to care for your horse's bare hooves, whether you wish to take over the trimming completely or simply maintain between your trimmer/farrier visits.
With the AEA Barefoot Trim Program you can learn to:
* trim the hooves as required and not just when it fits in with your trimmer's schedule * trim in-line with the seasonal changes of the hoof * trim only what is needed on any particular day * time the trimming to suit your riding and up-coming events * learn what the hooves require for optimum soundness * learn to recognise hoof problems before or as they start * learn the difference between a 'bare' hoof and a 'high performance' bare hoof * learn how problems with the feet create problems with the whole body * save time and money
